Air France: A bit of history
Air France (IATA:AF & ICAO:AFR) is France's leading airline and one of the world's largest passenger airlines. Air France was founded on 30 August 1933 as a result of the merger of Air Orient, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale de Pierre-Georges Latécoère, Société Générale de Transport Aérien (SGTA, the first French airline, founded in 1919 as Lignes Aériennes Farman), Air Union and CIDNA (Compagnie Internationale de Navigation).
A lot has happened since the first flight and Air France has grown to become a French airline with a strong global presence whose aim is to make every flight a moment of true pleasure. Air France operates more than 1,500 daily flights in France, Europe and throughout the world with a fleet of 312 aircraft carrying almost 100 million passengers each year.
Air France and KLM joined forces to form one of Europe's leading air transport groups in 2004. As a result of this alliance, both Air France and KLM could offer their millions of customers access to a network of 314 destinations in 116 countries around the world from its hubs at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam-Schiphol airports. Air France is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, made up of 19 of the world's leading airlines, and by booking with Air France you have access to a network operating over 14,500 flights to more than 1,150 destinations in over 175 countries worldwide.
As a curious fact we can include that during the Cold War period from 1950 to 1990, Air France was one of the three main "Allied" airlines with operations at Berlin Tempelhof and Berlin Tegel airports.
